Welcome to Our Services and Ceremonies
What to Expect
Whether you are new to Nichiren Shu or already chant Odaimoku in your daily life, you are warmly invited to join us. Below are our regular gatherings and special observances. All are open to beginners and longtime practitioners alike.
❋ Sunday ServiceEvery Sunday morning, we gather for sutra recitation and Odaimoku chanting. The service typically includes recitation of portions of the Lotus Sutra (in Shindoku or English), chanting of Namu Myoho Renge Kyo, and a short Dharma talk from the minister. The service lasts about 40 minutes to one hour and is a gentle introduction to Nichiren Shu practice for first-time visitors.
❋ Lotus Sutra Study SessionHeld regularly every Sunday, our Lotus Sutra lectures explore the sutra chapter by chapter. We discuss core teachings such as the One Vehicle, the Eternal Buddha, and the Bodhisattva ideal, Tiantai philosophy, and reflect on how they connect to everyday life. No background in Buddhist study is needed — come with your questions.
❋ Kito Blessing (Prayer Service)Kito is a special prayer ceremony in Nichiren Shu, conducted by a minister who has completed the hundred-day ascetic practice (Aragyo) and holds the Shuhosshi qualification. It is typically held on the first Sunday of each month. If you wish to offer prayers for yourself, your family, or a particular concern, you are welcome to participate.
❋ Other ObservancesThroughout the year we also observe Oeshiki (October 13), Ching Ming, Obon (Ghost Month), New Year’s services. and other ceremonies. Details are announced in our newsletter and social media.
❋ Wesak CelebrationEach year on the full moon day of May or June, we celebrate Wesak, honoring the birth, enlightenment, and passing of Shakyamuni Buddha. In Malaysia and other Southeast Asian Buddhist countries, this is one of the most important Buddhist festivals of the year. Our temple marks the occasion with a decorated altar, offerings of flowers, sutra recitation, Odaimoku chanting, and a bathing the Buddha ceremony. All are welcome.
Our temple also joins the annual Wesak float procession in Penang, walking together with other Buddhist communities in a joyful public procession through the streets. Members and friends are welcome to join us along the route or to help prepare our temple’s float.
Everyone is welcome. If you would like to know specific times and locations, or if you would like to let us know you are coming, please contact us through our Contact page. We look forward to practicing together with you.
